VMC Trojan’s standings  by Brian Murphy

This year both of our football teams are performing very well in their respective leagues.

As of writing this our Junior Varsity team has not lost a game yet, with 171 points in touchdowns and 21 points against their defense.

Our Varsity team in second place in four games with 125 points, and 53 points against with only one loss.

Vincent Massey Winnipeg is feared in the Winnipeg High School football league (WHSFL) for their amazing athletes, great coaches and a lot of support from the parents and fellow students at Vincent Massey.

The season has been going great so far, with everyone on the field performing and taking down the competition.

There is a very good possibility for another championship in Vincent Massey, which would look very good for our program here at Vincent Massey.

“I have always taught this team to be excellence, because you cannot achieve perfection.  Although it is impossible, these boys came as close as possible to perfection.”

-Head coach/offensive coordinator of Junior Varsity

Coach Adams

What do our grade 9s think of Massey?  We asked them on September 11, after the club fair and BBQ, and here is a sampling of what they had to say:

“In movies they make high school intimidating and scary for lower classmen, but in reality, it’s awesome!”

“Coming from a school with 500 students, there is a huge difference going to a school with around 1200 students.”

“I was a bit concerned with the fact that I came from a small school, but I adapted!”

“The size of the school is impressive.  My first impressions were positive.”

“I really liked what happened during the club fair.  The dance off.  Almost everyone in the gym crowded around.  It was pretty awesome.”

“I think club fair is a brilliant idea!  It’s a great way to introduce the clubs.  At my old school, I never knew about the clubs, and therefore never joined any.  But this year’s looking to be different.”

“Vincent Massey is a very welcoming school.  The older students have been great about welcoming us.  The teachers have also been great about answering all of my questions about the school.”

“It was really funny how scared all the grade 9s were and how lost some of us got.  I think everyone was a little taken aback by how big everything was, from the class sizes, the actual school, and most of all, the older students!!  I think we’re getting used to things now, so that’s good.”

“I like that we have 5 long periods instead of 8 short ones.  I like the freedom we get to choose some classes that interest us, and that our lunch is not set in stone, but is left up to us.”

“Most of all, I love having a canteen and being so close to the different stores like Seven Eleven and the bakery!

“Coming from three small schools, Massey is huge.  With my short height of 5’1”, I felt engulfed in the streams of students.  I’ve learned in the past week to take advantage of my size and squeeze between the other students.”

“I enjoy the increased complexity and learning associated with each class and how instead of dumping many major ideas and concepts into a few classes, there is more diversity and specified curriculums.”

“My first impression of Massey was that whoever designed the school had a life goal of making students late to class.  Now, I don’t think they did…”

“I really like the hot dogs at lunch hour.  I hope that there are more days like that.”

Q&A with Mr Carvey by Maegan Yallowega

I had the pleasure to sit down with Vincent Massey’s new principal, Mr. Carvey on Tuesday, September 30th. Although an extremely busy man, he was more than happy to answer our questions for the Trojan readers.

Q: We’re curious, how many students’ names do you think you have memorized by now?

A: That’s a really good question. Out of twelve hundred? I’d say that there’s probably two hundred and fifty. I did have a bit of an advantage because there was a number of them that came from Leech where I was their principal when they were in grade seven, so sometimes I do recognize faces.

Q: What is your favorite thing to order in the cafeteria?

A: You know, I haven’t ordered anything from the cafeteria yet. However, I’ve heard the breakfast sandwiches are amazing, and the first thing I’ll order is one of those. I’ve just been too busy at lunch time and can’t even get in there.

Q: Are there any big changes you are hoping to make in the school this year?

A: Well, there are some building stuff that was already planned. The counselor’s office, we’re changing that, and were going to change the student services area and Life Skills, we’re doing some construction in there. And another thing that’s on the books facility-wise is an elevator; a real elevator (I’m a bit scared to get in there.) As far as otherwise, it’s a great school, and I’m so lucky to be here and just keep going forward. Things are good.

Q: Is there a school event that you’re looking forward to?

A: I have heard a lot about the talent shows, and there has been talking among staff of putting a band together. I play a few drums in my spare time, so we’re looking at putting something together for one of the talent shows.

Q: How many classes do you estimate you visit every morning?

A: I visit every period one class every day which amounts to thirty five classes in total. I love it, it’s the best part of my day. It’s totally changed my day since I’m not really a morning person and it

gives me something to look forward to.

Q: Can you name one thing you love about Vincent Massey Collegiate?

A: You can quote me on the fact that I am just loving it here. I love the staff, I love the students, I love having an office with windows. Yeah, I just love it here
